About Chris-James Cognetta

Let’s get to know one another…

Chris-James Cognetta Licensed Professional Counselor

Hi! I’m Chris-James Cognetta, and I’m excited to be your primary counselor at A Mind at Ease. I’m here to support you in your therapy journey however I can. I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor with a private practice in Dallas, TX, where I also call home.

As a long-time Dallas resident, I’m actively involved in the community and work with nonprofit organizations to help people and their causes thrive.

Here’s a fun fact about me: I’ve worked as an actor, model, and comedian in my early years, and I was even featured in the last-ever Montgomery Ward catalog!

My counseling approach is rooted in existential therapy, which focuses on understanding how you view the world and helping you make choices based on new insights. Many people aren’t fully aware of themselves or the nature of their challenges, a concept known as restricted existence, and I’m here to guide you through that exploration.

Before my career in counseling, I spent years in corporate America, working with global firms in areas like corporate education, sales development, and human capital development. I’ve gained experience in industries ranging from healthcare to hospitality, IT, and telecom. In 2007, I shifted my focus to counseling when I realized many of my corporate clients were facing personal challenges that went beyond their professional lives. I earned my counseling credentials from Southern Methodist University.

During my internships, I gained valuable experience in corporate settings, a nonprofit youth center, and an outpatient rehabilitation facility. These diverse environments helped me work with a wide range of issues. My post-graduate training includes Gottman Level III, trauma, sexual dysfunction, and more.

I bring a unique and diverse background to my practice, just like the clients I work with. I look forward to helping you achieve your goals!

Integrative Existentialism…????

Existential theory emphasizes the idea that a new therapy is created with each client.   In other words, existential therapy is designed to be adaptive to the client’s needs, desires, and values. This lends itself to being a very adaptable therapeutic approach. Furthermore, being a rather unstructured approach that opposes rigidity, this approach is easier to adapt than most.
